Red Hen. Washington DC

When I say this place is amazing… people, please listen to me!!  I fell head over heels for this perfect restaurant tucked in the Shaw neighborhood.  It has always been on my list and I am glad I finally made it!

First of all, our server was absolutely amazing.  He knew the menu inside and out.  He gave us perfect recommendations.  Let’s start with appetizers: I had the Whipped Cow’s Milk Ricotta Crostini.  The ricotta was so creamy and the bread was so warm.  Second appetizer: Crispy Arancini ‘Cacio e Pepe’.  These little risotto balls (pictured below) were heaven on earth.  My husband and I ordered two entrees and our server threw in a surprise… a plate of their OFF THE MENU Cacio e Pepe.  I swear, Nona made the thick cut spaghetti noodles in the back!  Let’s talk about items on the menu:  I ordered the Mezzi Rigatoni, one of their most famous dishes.  I want to eat this everyday for the rest of my life.  I picture myself eating this dish in front of a warm fire on a faux fur blanket and a tall glass of red (it’s snowing in this picture, did you get that?).  Absolutely delicious! I didn’t want the bowl to end.  My husband got the Squid Ink Linguini.  The flavor in this dish is unreal.  Needless to say, his plate was clean.  In case we didn’t stuff our faces enough, the server suggested the Grilled Beef Short Rib with polenta for our entree.  The short rib was so tender it fell right apart.  The polenta was so creamy.   After a few bites, I was officially in a coma.  However, our fabulous server gave us some ice cream and cake to satisfy our sweet tooth.

Drinks:  If you are a true “Roman,”  I would suggest going off the menu and requesting an Aperol Negroni with whiskey.  Comforting and delicious.  If you are in the mood for a glass of wine, I would HIGHLY recommend the Pinot Nior.  Soft finishes and no sting.

I cannot wait to go back.  Please book in advance!  Took us 30 days for a reservation.  They do have a bar,

if you are willing to wait for a seat.

Thank you, Red Hen, for making my Italian dreams come true.  Finally a real Italian restaurant in DC!

xoxo,

Monica
